Um dieses wichtige Forschungsfeld zu vermitteln, wurde an der Medizinischen Universität Wien anhand von Medical Comics eine Broschüre zu diesem Thema in zwei Sprachen herausgebracht.Methodik: Medical Comics sind international etabliert, mit langer Geschichte in der Kommunikation von medizinischen Informationen und finden – eingebettet in die Dachorganisation der Graphic Medicine – großen Zuspruch und Anwendung. Im Rahmen des Ausstellungsprojektes „Art-Action-Attitude/Körper“ wurde aus 6 Panelen in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Künstlerin und einer Grafikerin zum Thema „Global Health“ eine 12 Seiten umfassende Broschüre gestaltet. Ergebnisse: Die Broschüre wurde bei der Ausstellung gratis zur Mitnahme aufgelegt, online gestellt, von der Künstlerin auf diversen Messen ausgeteilt und auf einer internationalen Tagung vorgestellt.Resümee: Die Zusammenarbeit mit Professionistinnen (Renate Mowlam: Künstlerin; Bettina Jarosch: Grafikerin) hat sich in einem hochwertigen Produkt materialisiert, das Inhalte entsprechend klar und niederschwellig erklärt und bildlich unterstützt. Dabei wurden in 46 Bildern die Themen „Gesundheit als Menschenrecht“, „Global Health“ (Begriffserklärung und Beispiele) und „One Health“ (Begriffserklärung und Beispiele) beleuchtet. So konnten sich Lesende rasch zu diesem komplexen Thema informieren, darüber nachdenken und das eigene Verhalten reflektieren. Aim: The topic of global health affects us all. In order to spread the word about this important medical field, a bilingual brochure containing medical comics on the subject was published at the Medical University of Vienna.Method: Medical comics are well established internationally, have a long history in the communication of medical information, and – under the umbrella of graphic medicine – are both popular and widely used. In the context of the exhibition project art-action-attitude/body, 6 panels were transformed into a 12-page brochure on the topic of global health in cooperation with an artist and a graphic designer.Results: The brochure was made available for free to visitors of the exhibition, published online, handed out at various fairs by the artist, and presented at an international conference.Summary: The collaboration with an artist and a graphic designer (Renate Mowlam, Bettina Jarosch) gave rise to a high-quality product that explains the subject matter clearly and in a way that is accessible to all, with the written word supported by images. In the brochure, 46 pictures shed light on the topics “health as a human right”, “global health” (definition and examples), and “one health” (definition and examples). This enabled readers to quickly become informed about this complex subject, to contemplate it, and to reflect on their own behavior.IntroductionWhen it comes to communicating medical concepts, there are various strategies to choose from. The Medical University of Vienna opted for medical comics as a new didactic approach (see figure 1 ). Medical comics are part of graphic medicine [https://www.graphicmedicine.org], which is considered to be at the intersection of comics and health care . Comics are published online or in print. There is a wide variety of material available for patients, relatives and loved ones, students, and medical personnel.From a historical perspective, medical comics have been used for decades to share knowledge and to inform the population, as shown by an example about syphilis from the year 1949 . Currently, there are numerous initiatives that seek to use comics in medical contexts, too. At the Charité in Berlin, Germany, an educational brochure using medical comics about cardiac catheterization was created , the effectiveness of which was later proven in a study . Medical comics are also used as teaching materials for medical students . One example of a text that imparts knowledge about diagnosing and treating an illness is a work on the blood disorder thalassemia , which has been translated into several languages.Comics are considered visual rhetoric. At their heart is the expression of ideas through the medium of drawing, with drawings being supplemented by words, whether individually or in stand-alone sentences (see figure 2 ). Comics make it easier to draw attention to the unspeakable and make it possible to gradually address complex and elusive topics. Comics also reach people who find reading challenging or face language barriers.Global health revolves around the uneven distribution of health-care resources and its impact on both a collective and an individual level. The fundamental considerations associated with global health are grounded in the notion that health is a human right and no one should be denied access to optimum care. The associated rights represent essential information for everyone. Furthermore, the “one health” approach takes into account the close connections between the health of people, animals, and the environment.EinleitungFür die Kommunikation von Gesundheitsbegriffen stehen vielfältige Strategien zur Verfügung. An der Medizinischen Universität Wien wurde als neuer didaktischer Zugang für dieses Projekt im Jahr 2021 jener der Medical Comics gewählt (siehe Abbildung 1 ). Diese sind Teil der Graphic Medicine [https://www.graphicmedicine.org/], die sich als Schnittmenge von Comics und dem Gesundheitswesen versteht . Beiträge werden online oder in gedruckter Form publiziert. Es besteht ein breites Angebot für Patient*innen, An- und Zugehörige, Studierende und medizinisches Personal.Medical Comics sind historisch betrachtet seit Jahrzehnten in Verwendung, um Wissen zu vermitteln und die Bevölkerung zu informieren, wie ein Beispiel aus 1949 zur Syphilis zeigt . Aktuell finden sich zahlreiche Initiativen, diese im medizinischen Bereich einzusetzen. An der Charité Berlin, Deutschland, wurde eine Aufklärungsbroschüre zum Thema Herzkatheter gestaltet , deren Effektivität im Rahmen einer Studie belegt wurde . Auch in der Lehre zur Ausbildung von Medizinstudierenden finden Medical Comics Anwendung . Als Beispiel für die Wissensvermittlung hinsichtlich Diagnose und Therapie einer Krankheit kann ein in mehreren Sprachen erschienenes Werk über die Bluterkrankung Thalassämie angeführt werden. Comics verstehen sich als visuelle Rhetorik. Ausdruck durch Zeichnung steht im Zentrum, ergänzt durch Wörter, Wortgruppen oder einzelne Sätze (siehe Abbildung 2 ). Sie erleichtern die Thematisierung von Unaussprechlichem und ermöglichen ein schrittweises Annähern an komplexe und schwer fassbare Themen. Comics erreichen auch Personen mit mangelnden Lesekompetenzen oder sprachlichen Barrieren.Globale Gesundheit/Global Health beschäftigt sich mit der ungleichen Verteilung von Gesundheitsressourcen und deren Auswirkungen auf kollektiver und individueller Ebene. Die grundsätzlichen Überlegungen von Global Health basieren darauf, dass Gesundheit ein Menschenrecht ist und niemandem der Zugang zu einer optimalen Versorgung verwehrt werden darf. Damit einhergehende Rechte sind essentielle Informationen für jede und jeden. Im „One-Health“-Ansatz werden darüber hinaus gesundheitliche Zusammenhänge an der Schnittstelle von Mensch, Tier und Umwelt berücksichtigt.Description of the projectAim of the current project was to provide adults with an introduction to the topic of global health and to design an appealing brochure. The collaboration with an artist and a graphic designer (Mowlam, Jarosch) gave rise to a high-quality product that describes the subject matter in a clear and accessible format supported by comics. This enabled readers to quickly become informed about the complex topic of global health, to contemplate and to reflect on their own behavior.In order to ensure a broad readership, the publication was uploaded to the exhibition homepage [https://teachingcenter.meduniwien.ac.at/lehre-und-projekte/medical-comics-ausstellung/], was used in seminars run by the Center for Public Health, and was handed out at events (e.g., the Long Night of Research). The creation of two versions (German and English) supported this endeavor and helped to communicate the topic to a broader audience (including its presentation at the international 34th Annual Conference of the Association for Anthropology and Medicine [AGEM] in June 2022).On account of the positive feedback and the large number of copies handed out (1,000 copies printed), the decision to further present content with the aid of medical comics in a printed format and outside of the classic literary form can be deemed very successful.Ergebnisse und DiskussionIm November 2021 ist eine 12-seitige Broschüre (16 cm/16,5 cm) mit 46 Panelen bzw. alleinstehenden Zeichnungen entstanden. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Professionistinnen (Mowlam, Jarosch) hat sich in einem hochwertigen Produkt materialisiert, das die Inhalte klar und niederschwellig erklärt und bildlich unterstützt. Damit konnten Lesende sich rasch zu diesem komplexen Thema informieren, darüber nachdenken und das eigene Verhalten reflektieren. Um eine breite Rezeption zu gewährleisten, wurde die Publikation auf die Homepage der Ausstellung [https://teachingcenter.meduniwien.ac.at/lehre-und-projekte/medical-comics-ausstellung/] gestellt, in Lehrveranstaltungen vom Zentrum für Public Health verwendet und in Veranstaltungen (z.B. Lange Nacht der Forschung) ausgeteilt. Die Kreation von zwei Versionen (deutsch und englisch) unterstützte und half, das Thema breit zu kommunizieren (u.a. auf der internationalen 34th Annual Conference of the Association for Anthropology and Medicine (AGEM) im Juni 2022 vorgestellt).Die Entscheidung, Inhalte mittels Medical Comics in einem Druckwerk weg von der klassischen literarischen Form zu präsentieren, ist ob des positiven Feedbacks und dem weitgehenden Absatz der Hefte (Auflage 1.000 Stück) als sehr erfolgreich zu bewerten.
