    <Abstract language="de" linked="yes"><Pgraph>Lehre zu Planetary Health befasst sich mit den Zusammenh&#228;ngen zwischen der Klima- und Umweltkrise und der menschlichen Gesundheit. Mit Fortschreiten der Krise mehren sich die Rufe nach fl&#228;chendeckender Integration von Lehre zu Planetary Health in die Aus-, Weiter- und Fortbildung aller Gesundheitsberufe. Die fl&#228;chendeckende Integration wird seit 2019 durch mehrere bundesweite Initiativen unterst&#252;tzt, die im folgenden Kommentar exemplarisch vorgestellt werden:  </Pgraph><Pgraph>1. PlanetMedEd Studie: Lehre zu Planetary Health an Medizinischen Fakult&#228;ten in Deutschland.</Pgraph><Pgraph>Die bundesweiten Initiativen sollen einen Beitrag zu standort&#252;bergreifender Zusammenarbeit, interprofessioneller Ausrichtung und rascher Implementierung von Lehre zu Planetary Health leisten.</Pgraph></Abstract>
    <Abstract language="en" linked="yes"><Pgraph>Planetary health education focuses on the climate and ecological crises and their adverse health effects. Given the acceleration of these crises, nationwide integration of planetary health education into undergraduate and graduate education, postgraduate training and continuing education for all health professionals has repeatedly been called for. Since 2019, planetary health education has been promoted by several national initiatives in Germany that are summarized in this commentary:</Pgraph><Pgraph>1. National Working Group Planetary Health Education,<LineBreak></LineBreak>2. Manual for planetary health education,<LineBreak></LineBreak>3. Catalog of National Planetary Health Learning Objectives in the National Competency-Based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Medical Education,<LineBreak></LineBreak>4. Working Group Climate, Environment and Health Impact Assessment at the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examinations,<LineBreak></LineBreak>5. Planetary Health Report Card, and<LineBreak></LineBreak>6. PlanetMedEd study: planetary health education in medical schools in Germany.</Pgraph><Pgraph>We hope these initiatives promote collaboration across institutions involved in educating and training health professionals, inter-professional cooperation as well as rapid implementation of planetary health education.</Pgraph></Abstract>

      <MainHeadline>Introduction</MainHeadline><Pgraph>Planetary health education focuses on the climate and ecological crises and their adverse health effects <TextLink reference="1"></TextLink>. Given the potential of health professionals to contribute to climate change mitigation, environmental protection and climate adaptation, nationwide integration of planetary health education into undergraduate and graduate education, postgraduate training and continuing education for all health professionals has been repeatedly called for <TextLink reference="2"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="3"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="4"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="5"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="6"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="7"></TextLink>, first studies show the demand of the students <TextLink reference="8"></TextLink>. Several initiatives have been launched in Germany since 2019 to support these efforts. In this commentary, we provide an overview of selected national initiatives including contact information and recommendations for further reading.</Pgraph></TextBlock>

      <MainHeadline>Six selected national initiatives</MainHeadline><SubHeadline2>1. National Working Group Planetary Health Education</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>The inter-professional working group, jointly hosted by the German Alliance on Climate Change and Health and Health for Future, was founded in February 2021 to provide a platform for knowledge exchange targeting all health professionals involved in planetary health education. The working group focuses on different aspects of planetary health education including presentations of innovative modular teaching materials and syllabi of elective courses as well as journal clubs covering seminal contributions to the field of planetary health education. Manual for planetary health education</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>In 2021, members of the national working group developed a manual for planetary health education targeting both staff and students at universities and universities of applied sciences involved in teaching. On 50 pages, the authors present, <Mark2>inter alia</Mark2>, background information on planetary health education, didactic principles, best-practice examples and recommendations for further reading. Given its hands-on approach, the manual supports the integration of planetary health education in institutions of higher education. For example, the manual provides suggestions on how to integrate content of the Planetary Health Academy <TextLink reference="9"></TextLink> of the German Alliance on Climate Change and Health, including slides and video recordings of lectures, into planetary health education &#91;<Hyperlink href="https:&#47;&#47;planetary-health-academy.de&#47;">https:&#47;&#47;planetary-health-academy.de&#47;</Hyperlink>&#93;. The latest version of the manual is available online <TextLink reference="10"></TextLink>.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>3. Catalog of National Planetary Health Learning Objectives in the National Competency-Based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Medical Education </SubHeadline2><Pgraph>The Catalog of National Planetary Health Learning Objectives <TextLink reference="11"></TextLink> was developed between 2019-2021 as part of a nationwide multi-stakeholder process to refine the Competency-based Catalog of Learning Objectives &#91;<Hyperlink href="https:&#47;&#47;www.nklm.de">https:&#47;&#47;www.nklm.de</Hyperlink>&#93;. The catalog comprises learning objectives on clinical competencies for climate adaptation and climate-sensitive anticipatory guidance as well as skills supporting physicians in initiating and implementing change processes outside patient care that contribute to climate mitigation and sustainability. To promote the integration of planetary health education in all areas of medical education, the catalog contains cross references to the main chapters of the Competency-Based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Medical Education. The planetary health learning objectives can guide, <Mark2>inter alia</Mark2>, the development of longitudinal planetary health curricula or focus areas within medical curricula stipulated in the current version of the updated medical licensing regulations for Germany.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>4. Working Group Climate, Environment and Health Impact Assessment at the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examinations </SubHeadline2><Pgraph>The Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examinations, developing and administering centralized state examinations for medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, and psychotherapy in Germany, founded the working group in January 2021. The inter-professional working group comprises external experts and aims at adding aspects of planetary health education to the syllabi of the state examinations.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>5. Planetary Health Report Card</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>In this international initiative, medical students evaluate their medical schools based on standardized planetary health indicators covering the following areas: </Pgraph><Pgraph><OrderedList><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="1" numString="1.">planetary health curriculum, </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="2" numString="2.">interdisciplinary research, </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="3" numString="3.">institutional support for student-led initiatives, </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="4" numString="4.">community outreach and advocacy, and </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="5" numString="5.">campus sustainability. </ListItem></OrderedList></Pgraph><Pgraph>While previously restricted to the USA, Canada, UK and Ireland, several medical schools in Germany have been evaluated based on the report card since 2021. The extension of the report card to curricula of other health professionals is currently prepared by the international PHRC team. AG Planetary Health Lehre</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>Seit Februar 2021 finden regelm&#228;&#223;ig Online-Treffen der bundesweiten interprofessionellen AG statt, die von der Deutschen Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit (KLUG e.V.) und von Health for Future getragen wird. Die AG bietet eine Austauschplattform f&#252;r alle Menschen in Gesundheitsberufen, die an Lehre zu Planetary Health interessiert sind. Schwerpunktthemen waren bisher u.a. die Vorstellung von adaptierbaren Unterrichtsmaterialien und Wahl(pflicht)f&#228;chern sowie Journal Clubs. Leitfaden f&#252;r Lehrangebote zu Planetary Health </SubHeadline2><Pgraph>Im Rahmen der AG Planetary Health Lehre entstand 2021 ein Leitfaden, der auf rund 50 Seiten wichtige Hintergrundinformationen, didaktische Grunds&#228;tze, Anwendungsbeispiele und weiterf&#252;hrende Literatur f&#252;r Lehrangebote zu Planetary Health in medizinischen und gesundheitswissenschaftlichen Studieng&#228;ngen bereitstellt. Der Leitfaden richtet sich gleicherma&#223;en an Lehrverantwortliche und Studierende, die sich in der Lehre engagieren. Durch praxisnahe Inhalte soll die fl&#228;chendeckende Integration von Lehrangeboten an Universit&#228;ten und Hochschulen erleichtert werden. Im Leitfaden werden beispielsweise M&#246;glichkeiten beschrieben, wie Inhalte der Planetary Health Academy von KLUG <TextLink reference="9"></TextLink> (z.B. Der Leitfaden steht in der jeweils aktuellen Version online zur Verf&#252;gung <TextLink reference="10"></TextLink>.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>3. Kapitel&#252;bergreifender Themen- und Fachkatalog Planetare und Globale Gesundheit im Nationalen Kompetenzbasierten Lernzielkatalog Medizin (NKLM)</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>Im Zuge der Weiterentwicklung des NKLM &#91;<Hyperlink href="https:&#47;&#47;www.nklm.de">https:&#47;&#47;www.nklm.de</Hyperlink>&#93; wurde zwischen 2019-2021 der optionale Zusatzkatalog <Mark2>Planetare und Globale Gesundheit</Mark2> entwickelt <TextLink reference="11"></TextLink>. Er umfasst klinische Kompetenzen zur Klimafolgenanpassung und zur klimasensiblen Gesundheitsberatung ebenso wie Fertigkeiten, die &#196;rzt&#42;innen bei der Initiierung und Umsetzung klima- und nachhaltigkeitswirksamer Ver&#228;nderungsprozesse au&#223;erhalb der Patient&#42;innenversorgung unterst&#252;tzen. Um die Integration von Lehre zu Planetary Health in allen Bereichen des Medizinstudiums zu erleichtern, enth&#228;lt der Themen- und Fachkatalog umfangreiche Querverweise zu anderen Kapiteln des NKLM. Der Katalog kann u.a. f&#252;r die Entwicklung von longitudinalen Curricula und Vertiefungsbereichen genutzt werden, wie sie in der neuen &#196;rztlichen Approbationsordnung angedacht sind.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>4. AG Klima, Umwelt und gesundheitliche Folgenabsch&#228;tzung am Institut f&#252;r Medizinische und Pharmazeutische Pr&#252;fungsfragen (IMPP)</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>Im Januar 2021 nahm die aus externen Expert&#42;innen zusammengesetzte AG am Institut f&#252;r Medizinische und Pharmazeutische Pr&#252;fungsfragen (IMPP) ihre Arbeit auf. Die interprofessionelle AG erg&#228;nzt den Gegenstandskatalog um Aspekte zu Planetary Health, sodass diese in den vom IMPP verantworteten Staatsexamina f&#252;r Human- und Zahnmedizin, Pharmazie sowie Psychotherapie perspektivisch Ber&#252;cksichtigung finden.</Pgraph><SubHeadline2>5. Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC)</SubHeadline2><Pgraph>Im Rahmen dieser internationalen Initiative bewerten Medizinstudierende ihre Fakult&#228;t anhand standardisierter Indikatoren zu Planetary Health, die folgenden Dimensionen zuzuordnen sind: </Pgraph><Pgraph><OrderedList><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="1" numString="1.">Lehre,</ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="2" numString="2.">interdisziplin&#228;re Forschung, </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="3" numString="3.">kommunale Einbindung der Fakult&#228;t, </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="4" numString="4.">Unterst&#252;tzung f&#252;r studentische Initiativen und </ListItem><ListItem level="1" levelPosition="5" numString="5.">Nachhaltigkeit auf dem Campus. </ListItem></OrderedList></Pgraph><Pgraph>W&#228;hrend in der Vergangenheit nur medizinische Fakult&#228;ten in angels&#228;chsischen L&#228;ndern anhand der PHRC evaluiert wurden, werden seit 2021 auch medizinische Fakult&#228;ten in Deutschland in die Bewertung einbezogen.       <MainHeadline>Conclusions</MainHeadline><Pgraph>To fully harness the transformative potential of health professionals for climate change mitigation, environmental protection and climate adaptation, it is crucial to integrate planetary health education into undergraduate and graduate education, postgraduate training and continuing education for all health professionals. We hope that the national initiatives summarized in this commentary will contribute to the implementation of planetary health education in medical schools and to support cooperation across institutions by describing the status quo, highlighting unmet needs, providing networking opportunities and promoting the development of teaching resources.</Pgraph><Pgraph>Complementing the national initiatives presented here, planetary health education could be promoted by several other measures. National initiatives currently focusing on medical education could be adapted and extended to other health professions. Networking among initiatives could contribute to inter-professional collaboration that is instrumental in addressing the substantial adverse health effects of the climate and ecological crises. Comparable to the Competency-Based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Medical Education, planetary health education should be integrated in other legal documents including the updated medical licensing regulations and learning objectives of other health professions. Complementing the development of teaching materials for students, lecturers should be supported in expanding their expertise in planetary health and their didactic skills to deliver high-quality transformative teaching <TextLink reference="2"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="3"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="12"></TextLink>.</Pgraph></TextBlock>

      <MainHeadline>Schlussfolgerungen</MainHeadline><Pgraph>Um das Wissen und das transformative Potenzial von Gesundheitsfachkr&#228;ften in den Bereichen Klima- und Umweltschutz sowie Klimafolgenanpassung zu st&#228;rken, ist eine fl&#228;chendeckende und zeitnahe Integration von Lehre zu Planetary Health in die Aus-, Weiter- und Fortbildung aller Gesundheitsfachkr&#228;fte notwendig. Die hier vorgestellten bundesweiten Initiativen, die auf Bedarfs- und Zustandsanalysen fokussieren sowie Vernetzung und Ressourcenentwicklung f&#246;rdern, sollen Impulse zu lokaler Lehrentwicklung und standort&#252;bergreifender Zusammenarbeit geben.</Pgraph><Pgraph>Erg&#228;nzend zu den hier dargestellten Initiativen k&#246;nnten weitere Ansatzpunkte die Lehrentwicklung zu Planetary Health f&#246;rdern. W&#228;hrend viele bundesweite Initiativen derzeit auf die Humanmedizin fokussieren, k&#246;nnten vergleichbare Initiativen in weiteren Berufsfeldern gef&#246;rdert werden. Die Vernetzung zwischen den Initiativen k&#246;nnte einen Beitrag zur interprofessionellen Zusammenarbeit leisten, die f&#252;r die Bew&#228;ltigung der enormen gesundheitlichen Herausforderungen durch die Klima- und Umweltkrise notwendig ist. Analog zum NKLM sollten Inhalte zu Planetary Health in weitere Rahmenwerke wie die aktualisierte &#196;rztliche Approbationsordnung oder die Lernzielkataloge und Ausbildungsordnungen weiterer Gesundheitsberufe aufgenommen werden. Erg&#228;nzend zur Entwicklung von Lehrinhalten f&#252;r Studierende sollten Angebote geschaffen werden, damit Lehrende ihr Fachwissen zu Planetary Health und ihre didaktischen Fertigkeiten zur anwendungsbezogenen und transformativen Lehre erweitern k&#246;nnen <TextLink reference="2"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="3"></TextLink>, <TextLink reference="12"></TextLink>. </Pgraph></TextBlock>
