Abstract
The German Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area has evaluated the components of metal-working fluids since 1982. A list of these compounds has been published and is updated regularly in co-operation with lubricant manufacturers in Germany. The list includes also hydraulic fluids and other lubricants because significant amounts of these components may leak into metal-working fluids during application. The list provides information for about 360 components or component groups; however, it is not complete because manufacturers are not obligated to report all components. This is especially true for metal-working fluids. Each list entry includes the CAS number, structural formulas and use concentrations, if known. Compounds that are prohibited for use in metal-working fluids have been compiled in a “historical” list with the reason for their discontinuation. The reader is advised to check whether the Commission has published an evaluation of the toxicity of the component of interest.
